Our pursuit is to understand Islam in a way that is embedded in our time and place and help educate people around this understanding.
This has always been the pursuit of Muslims, so on that level its nothing new. Terms such as: islah (reform), tajdid (renewal), ihya (revival) and ijtihad (juristic reasoning) are not new to our tradition, far from it – they are key ideas in a forward-looking vision of Islam.
It’s about being at the heart of our tradition and working from within the tradition to speak to issues of the day. But the fact that the tradition says that opinions will change based on time and place means that we will always discover new things and new ways of manifesting the tradition – and that’s where looking towards ‘new horizons’ becomes very important.
