Great Christmas Get Together

For Christmas 2017, New Horizons in British Islam worked with young Muslims in Leicester and Blackburn as they volunteered their time to the elderly.

Age UK says that nearly a million older people say they feel lonelier at Christmas than at any other time, which is why New Horizons took part in the 'Great Christmas Get Together' to show that we all have more in common than that which divides us.

One of the volunteers Rukhsana Hussain from Leicester, said:

“At a time when families and friends come together to be with each other, we felt it was important to remember those that can’t be with their loved ones or simply have no one. If it means pulling up a chair and having a chat or just sharing a mince pie, we want them to know they aren’t alone.

“It’s also important for us to be here because we want to show people that even though we are from different backgrounds we belong to the same community. Some of the elderly people we’re meeting might not usually spend time with young Muslims. These young Muslims want to make a positive impact in their community, so it’s heart warming to see how much we all share and have in common.”
